BREWING SUSTAINABILITY: TURNING COFFEE CHAFF INTO A GREEN REVOLUTION

At The Roastery at Twenty Three, our commitment to crafting exceptional coffee extends beyond the perfect roast. It's about embracing sustainability at every stage of our process, even with the by-products. Enter the world of coffee chaff, the outer layer or skin of the coffee bean that takes centre stage in our latest green initiative.

The Chaff Challenge: Turning Waste into Opportunity

What is Chaff: Chaff, the light and fluffy outer layer of the coffee bean, is a natural by-product of our meticulous roasting process. Once the coffee is roasted to perfection, the chaff is collected, presenting us with a challenge – how to manage this lightweight coffee skin in an eco-friendly way.

Chaff Compactor: In our quest for sustainability, we've implemented a chaff compactor at our roastery. This ingenious machine takes the delicate chaff and compacts it into manageable 'pucks,' making it easier to handle and transport.

Ecostock: A Sustainable Solution to the Chaff Challenge

Discovery of Ecostock: Enter Ecostock, an innovative New Zealand-owned company that caught the attention of our innovations manager. Ecostock specializes in repurposing food waste into high-value stock feed for dairy farmers.

A Green Partnership: We're thrilled to announce our partnership with Ecostock. They now collect all the chaff pucks from our roastery and, along with other food waste, transform it into nutrient-rich stock feed. This collaboration ensures that our coffee chaff, once a potential waste headache, is repurposed, and landfill is no longer in its future.

EcoStock's Green Legacy: More Than Just Coffee Chaff

EcoStock's Commitment: Operating for 15 years, Ecostock is a 100% New Zealand-owned business with a mission to redefine waste. They collect food waste from over 140 clients, processing a staggering 30,000 tonnes of food waste annually.

Beyond Coffee Chaff: Ecostock's vision goes beyond just coffee chaff. They founded EcoGas, a ground-breaking Food-2-Fuel initiative. This Anaerobic Digestion Plant turns organics unsuitable for stock feed into an alternative and renewable source of gas – a testament to their commitment to sustainability.
